Memes are a good way to bring a text onto a scene (in a virtual scene) and easily achieve a public success. They have been defined as the minimum unit of transmission of cultural heritage, because with very little information they can communicate a great deal. There are many types of memes and, like some viruses, they evolve and mutate to suit the communicative needs of the time.
Memes are also a good field for exploring concepts such as humour, criticism, self-reference and the boundaries of collective communication. Xesca Salvà and Marc Villanueva Mir experimented with the memes of the boomer generation, the sticker collections, to discuss the functioning of bacteria and fungus. In Concurso de malos talentos, José y sus Hermanas played with popular, virtually viral messages to speak of his generation. Finally, you can see an interview with the artist and founder of UBUweb, Kenneth Goldsmith, who has reflected on these minimum content units and on the impact of the Internet culture on writing and creation.
