For this new work, South African and queer artist and choreographer installed in France Steven Cohen will be receiving the audience in his boudoir. If up until now his performances have consisted of exposing or even over- exposing himself both on stage and in public spaces, this time he will welcome the audience into a space both intimate and reserved.

The dressing table is traditionally a room inside a bourgeois house reserved for female conversations, between the living room and the bedroom: the inverted reflection of the predominantly male sphere of public and social spaces. Boudoir is then more than a physical space, it is a situation: a collection, in every sense of the word: a lexicon, a salon, an exhibition, a sum of disparate elements that form an autonomous whole, a private undertaking inviting in strangers. It is an installation/performance that gathers what the artist has done and continues to create but does not allow itself to be identified, assigned, classified, contained in the order of discourses, of history, of oppressions.

This performative installation is the culmination of the works of Cohen, performer and visual artist born in 1962. Each element houses fragments of memories that come from a past collective life (bourgeois sociabilities, gadgets and disguises, relics of religion and war, trophies that celebrate the domination of man over nature, on animals or bodies and distant cultures...). Through the collage or convergence of contradictory memories, objects, furniture and clothing generate hybrid and metamorphic forms.
