Until 20 years ago, kisses were always faked on stage –kisses on the mouth, that is. Actors used three main tactics to hide the fact that they were faking a kiss:
a) The gentleman leaned over the lady, gently turned her head to the side so as to “respectably” hide the kiss, and kissed the actress on the cheek or her upper lip.
b) The gentleman passionately caressed the woman with two hands, resting both of them on her cheeks. When it came time to smooch, the lad placed his thumb over the lady’s mouth and kissed his own thumb.
c) The leading man bent his head and took the woman’s head in his hands, kissing her between the cheekbone and the mouth, a location which was relatively hidden, since the man’s hand blocked it from view.
