Olga, Masha and Irina are back onstage. The idea of a better life pervades the longings of General Prózorov’s daughters, but here in the countryside, away from everyone else, only tedium reigns. And Moscow is so far away…

The actor and director Julio Manrique is back at the Teatre Lliure after the success of Henrik Ibsen’s L’ànec salvatge [The Wild Duck] in 2017. This time he is coming with a play by Chekhov (1860-1904), a classic playwright he had not returned to since the 2010 premiere of his staging of L’hort dels cirerers [The Cherry Orchard] at the Teatre Romea.

The story tells of three sisters (Olga, Masha and Irina) and their brother (Andrei) in the unsatisfying, decadent life of the privileged classes in rural Russia. Moscow is the main symbolic element in the play, always idealised and yearned for by the characters, waiting closed in their bubble a new world that is just dawning.
